About

Man pointing at view of Okanagan Lake from Knox Mountain Kelowna, BC

Hey hey, welcome! I’m Adam but you can find me online as Weather Permitted. I’ve been moving around and traveling for all of my adult life. I first started backpacking at 20 when I did five months in Central America.

The trip through Central America started in Kelowna, British Columbia, where I grew up. A friend and I got the opportunity to drive a U-haul to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. From there the goal was to keep going all the way down to Panama. We left Canada in August and I didn’t return till January.

A not so quick overview of that trip goes like this.

The Luxor Casino In Las Vegas Nevada

The First Trip

Three days in the USA going through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Las Vegas, Nevada and Arizona.

Seven weeks in Mexico. We crossed the US border at Nogales, Sonora. From there we drove through Sinola and Nayarit and then finally into Jalisco where Puerto Vallarta is located. We stayed in Puerto Vallarta for about a month and did day trips to towns like Sayulita, a beautiful little surfer village.

Once we left Jalisco we went to Guadalajara, Guanajuato, and into Mexico City where we stayed for about a week. Afterwards we went through Vera Cruz, Villahermosa and Palenque before heading into Guatemala.

We spent another six weeks in Guatemala, which is one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. There are so many incredible and beautiful locations.

The first place we stayed in Guatemala was Flores. It is this little island town on Lago Peten Itza. A blogger friend of mine, Matt, wrote an excellent 3-day Flores Itinerary, which brought back a lot of great memories for me. If you are interested in what Flores is like now, it is definitely worth a read.

From there we went to Livingston Antigua before working at a hostel on the Lago de Atitlan for a month. This is where my friend and I went different directions and I became a solo traveler for the rest of the trip.

In all fairness, you always are meeting new people that are going in similar directions as you so you’re not really alone all that often. Back then I referred to them as three day friends. Now with social media being so prevalent a lot more of those three day friends become life time friends.

While at the hostel in Santa Cruz I set up some volunteer work through an American NGO called Solar Energies International in Nicaragua. I was having such a good time in Guatemala that I left little time for Honduras. Spending one night at the border to get into Honduras and then non stop buses and taxis till I got to El Parisio. There I spent a night before heading into Esteli and then Managua, Nicaragua.

Sitting on the beach looking towards Costa Rica in the background.

I did two weeks of volunteering, and working with solar panels in an incredibly small town named Sabana Grande. It couldn’t have had more than 100  people in the town with me being the only person who spoke any English the second week.

Afterwards, I went to the cities of Leon, Granada and San Juan del Sur before heading into Costa Rica where I spent another 3 weeks or so. That entailed stops in  Monteverde, San Jose, Limon and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.

From there I jumped into Panama for another couple weeks with stops in Bocas del Toro and Panama City, where I spent Christmas. On December 27 I flew to Las Vegas to meet a friend and drove to Santa Cruz California for New Years. Afterwards, I flew back to Canada with literally less than 20 dollars left. First trip was a success!

Since The Trip Ended

Since then I’ve done many trips to Europe, the USA and across Canada. I went to the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columba where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology.

Where Weather Permitted Came From

The name Weather Permitted came about cause my friends used to say that I go anywhere, rain or shine. The name is really just a play on that. Most people say they will go somewhere weather permitting. Weather permitting has never been much of an issue for me.

I'm standing in front of the Arcade du Cinquantenaire in Brussels.

I’ve been to 16 different countries and that number continues to grow. I’m currently living in the Basque city of Bilbao.

I do quite a lot of writing in this area and I have another website dedicated specifically to that called AuthenticBasqueCountry.com. Check it out!

Castle Butron in Biscay, Basque Country

I hope that you’ll join me for a while so we can explore together in the countryside and through the cities. Rain and shine with wanderlust, all weather permitted.
